दास्तान जबानी बयानिया है जिसे पेश करने वाले दास्तानगो जबान, बयान, शायरी और किस्त के माहिर होते थे। दास्तानें बहुत-सी सुनाई गई पर इनमें सबसे मशहूर हुई दास्ताने अमीर हमज़ा जिनमें हजरत मोहम्मद सः के चचा अमीर हमज़ा की जिन्दगी और उनके शानदार कारनामों को बयान किया जाता है। 18वीं और 19वीं सदी में जब ये दास्तान उर्दू में मकबूल हुई तो इससे अदब और पेशकश का बेहतरीन मेल पैदा हुआ और इनमें कई ऐसी बातों का इजाफा हुआ जो खालिस हिन्दुस्तानी मिज़ाज़ की थीं मसलन, तिलिस्म और अय्यारी जो बाद में दास्तानगोई का सबसे अहम हिस्सा साबित हुईं। बेशुमार क़िस्म के जानदार, सय्यारे सल्तनतें, तिलिस्म, जादूगर, देव, अय्यार, और अय्यारायें जैसे किरदारों पर मुश्तमिल दास्ताने अमीर हमज़ा आखिरकार 46 जख़ीम जिल्दों में पूरी होकर छपी और उर्दू अदब और हिन्दुस्तानी फनूने लतीफा का मेराज साबित हुई। दास्तानगोई का फन जबानी और तहरीरी दोनों शक्लों में जिस वक्त अपने उरूज पर पहुँचा तकरीबन उसी वक्त नए मिजाज और नए मीडिया की आमद के साथ बड़ी तेजी से इसका जवाल भी हुआ। आखि़री दास्तानगो मीर बाकर अली का इन्तकाल 1928 में हुआ और इसके साथ ही ये अजमी रवायत नापैद हो गई।
